Origins of Trick or Treating

There are many stories as to the way trick-or-treating might have begun:

Fooling the Spirits

Many people believed long ago that ghosts walked the earth on Halloween. They believed that fairies and ghouls played tricks on people. The way they fooled the spirits was to put on costumes. One Halloween a group of young people called on a neighbor. When she came to the door she got a fright. She did not know that the "spirits" at the door were some of the young people of the village. She thought that the spirits had come to fool her.

She decided to prevent them from tricking her to give them food and money so they would leave. They were surprised by the gifts and thanked the neighbor. Going onto the next house where the some thing happened! They had so much fun that they decided to do this every Halloween!

Trick Or Treating

The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates, (Panati).

It originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven.

In All Souls' Day, European Christians had a tradition of going from home to home, asking for soul cakes, or currant buns. In return, they would pray for the souls of the homeowner's relatives.

Soul Caking

People wanted to welcome the friendly spirits so they baked special soul cakes for them. When children came dressed in their costumes on All Hallow's Eve, they were given soul cakes.
